The benefits of having a coach

Always wanted to start your fitness journey but have no idea where to start? Do you tell yourself you are going to ‘start tomorrow’ but never do? Do you get confused from all the misleading information online surrounding the fitness industry?

A common question I get asked as a personal trainer is “how do I start my fitness journey?” My answer never changes and always remains “Just start”. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ time or circumstances - start today!

I know what you’re thinking… how to begin, what equipment to use, cardio or weights, what to eat, how many times to train, which exercises to do etc? It can be overwhelming, especially if you are a beginner. My aim in this blog is to explain the benefits of seeking the help and advice of a personal trainer or coach.

Having a coach to set you off in the right direction can be very beneficial and makes the task of maintain motivation and goals more easily achievable and relevant for those looking for sustainable and long-lasting changes. If you are fed up and feel as if you are going round in circles and not understanding the whole process of health, nutrition and fitness or feel as if you are lacking in confidence or knowledge - the answer is most likely, yes. Not only does a coach set you up with a better chance of succeeding with your goals, a good personal trainer or mentor will always have your best interest at heart and if a successful relationship is built between you both, the chances of a successful outcome are much improved.

If you have read my previous blog on motivation, you will understand the importance of being disciplined. In the first instance, you have to actually want to change in order to reach your goals and more importantly, it pays to have someone to monitor your progress and help you throughout your fitness journey. A conscientious coach will keep you on track by checking in with you, guiding, supporting, motivating and educating you. However, it is not a one-way street, communication is vital. A coach cannot read your mind and does not know how you feel unless you are completely honest. The importance of building trust within the relationship is key.

However, there may be many reasons as to why you may be reluctant to make use of a personal trainer or a coach, foremost amongst them being the perceived extra financial cost. However, I firmly believe that a competent personal trainer or coach is a great investment towards achieving your personal fitness and lifestyle goals. Following random workouts and conflicting advice online is often counterproductive. Nothing beats the personal guidance of a good personal trainer or coach.
