Motivation matters

“How do you stay so motivated all the time?” As a personal trainer I often get asked this very question. The simple answer is - I don’t. At least, not all the time. There are productive days and not so productive days, happy days and not so happy days. This is perfectly normal. No one feels motivated 365 days of the year. We are only human and there are always going to be fluctuations in our levels of motivation.    The truth is that motivation isn’t actually a tangible thing, rather more an internal process – it’s just the desire and determination to achieve something. There is no secret way/technique to maintaining motivation. You can feel motivated from reading a quote, following a fitness page, seeing an inspirational post online or simply be inspired by someone you may or may not know. Ditch the peer pressure - do it for yourself!

You may feel you fall well short of the media's idea of 'perfection' and what constitutes 'normal' (in their eyes) and feel under pressure from your peers and friends and social media to aspire or conform to a certain look, weight, level of fitness or lifestyle.  We all like to be part of a crowd at times and being different is often difficult. However, taking charge of your own physical and mental health need not be so difficult or exclude you from having fun. Taking control of your life takes some discipline and commitment but the benefits far outweigh the required sacrifices.  No matter who you are, setting short, medium and long term goals in terms of your fitness and health is always a good thing. Whatever your starting point, setting realistic and achievable targets is key. Success will follow if you adopt a positive mindset and the commitment required.
