Ditch the peer pressure - do it for yourself!

You may feel you fall well short of the media's idea of 'perfection' and what constitutes 'normal' (in their eyes) and feel under pressure from your peers and friends and social media to aspire or conform to a certain look, weight, level of fitness or lifestyle.

We all like to be part of a crowd at times and being different is often difficult. However, taking charge of your own physical and mental health need not be so difficult or exclude you from having fun. Taking control of your life takes some discipline and commitment but the benefits far outweigh the required sacrifices.

No matter who you are, setting short, medium and long term goals in terms of your fitness and health is always a good thing. Whatever your starting point, setting realistic and achievable targets is key. Success will follow if you adopt a positive mindset and the commitment required. Don't be overambitious, be firm but kind to yourself and remember progress is progress, no matter how big or small. Don't measure yourself against others. You are your own competition.

Losing weight, toning up, gaining muscle, improving fitness are all goals which should be tailored to you and you alone. Social media can be great fun but never allow it to determine or dictate your personal journey. Remember much of social media content is fake news and will only hinder your progress if you're constantly comparing yourself to unrealistic and often unnatural examples of "perfection".

So, how to start? Getting a fair and honest appraisal of your goals is the first step. Even if your immediate goals are primarily aesthetic, you will find if you adopt an holistic approach to your health and fitness many benefits will follow. Most importantly the mental health benefits from your new lifestyle will often outweigh your physical improvements. Once you're on the right path you will soon realise that the biggest factor in your progress will be yourself.

Always remember - you are stronger than you think.
